Cone dry, or fleshy (Juniperus); when dry a galbulus (Cupressus Spjut Fig. 9C-D, 7; 3 families: Cupressaceae (not for Juniperus), Gnetaceae, Taxodiaceae); globose, or ovoid (-oblong); with scales; scales with fused subtending bracts, or scales with separate subtending bracts (rarely); an arcesthida when fleshy (Juniperus). Fruiting scales present; dry (Cupressus), or fleshy (Juniperus and drupelike); persisting (Cupressus), or disintegrating (Actinostrobus); coriaceous, or woody.

Seeds

Aril absent. Seed larger than minute; in transection compressed; not bowl shaped; not nutlike; without winglike beak; without caudate appendage(s); at maturity with food reserves; with endosperm; without canavanine. Sarcotesta absent. Testa present; without fleshy or leathery layer over hard layer; tight; surface smooth, or unsmooth; surface with depressed features, or discreet raised features, or merged raised features; surface pitted; surface granular; surface glandular blisters, or rugose, or striate, or wrinkled; without crease or line separating cotyledons from hypocotyl-radicle; without notch along margin where cotyledons from hypocotyl-radicle tip approach each other; without glands; without bristles; glabrous; with wing(s), or without wings (rarely); 2-winged, or 1-winged; with wing encompassing seed, or wing on one side, or wings on both sides; with wings equally developed, or wings unequally developed; with wing(s) solid; with solid wing(s) similar to testa (assumed); without collar; without operculum; colored; monochrome; brown (all shades); thin, or membranous; not becoming mucilaginous when wetted; surrounding food reserve. Endosperm copious to scant; fleshy; opaque; smooth; without fatty acid containing cyclopropene; without apical lobes; without chlorophyll; without isodiametric faceted surface; without odor.

Embryo differentiated from food reserve; well developed; 1 per seed; partially filling testa (with food reserve), or nearly filling testa (trace or scanty food reserve); at one end of seed not extending into a depression or cup; axile and centric; linear (somewhat); straight; parallel to seed length; with cotyledons gradually connected to hypocotyl-radicle; without coleorhiza; without simmondsin; without stomata; not green; with 2 or more cotyledons. Cotyledons 2, or 7 (rarely); well developed; 0.4–0.8 times length of embryo; as wide as hypocotyl-radicle, or somewhat to significantly wider than hypocotyl-radicle; 1–1.5 times wider than hypocotyl-radicle; not concealing hypocotyl-radicle; not foliaceous; moderately thick; flat; smooth; with apices entire; with margins separate; basally entire; equal in size; not punctate dotted. Hypocotyl-radicle well developed; straight; not thickened.

Cosmopolitan (mostly cool to warm temperate climate). New World, Old World. North America, Middle America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia Major, Asia Minor, southeastern Asia, Australia, Oceania.
