Family guide for fruits and seeds |
We express our appreciation to Karen Parker for preparation of the seed drawings. Special thanks go to Robert Gibbons of USDA, APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine for preparing the fruit and seed photographs, scanning and preparing the seed-embryo drawings, and preparing the character images. Robert Gibbons and Carole A. Ritchie collaborated to prepare the introductory image using the fruit and seed photographs that Mr. Gibbons prepared. Erin McCray installed our database on the USDA, ARS Systematic Botany and Mycology web site and assisted in making it function via the Internet. Kate O’Mara extracted familial synonyms and accepted generic names from the USDA Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN), and installed them in the database. She also reviewed selected data. John H. Wiersema supplied sage nomenclatural advice and reviewed many of the scientific names employed in the database. We also express our appreciation to Joseph Cavey, Polly Lehtonen, Mark Thurmond, Rodney Young, and Mary Palm Hernández of USDA, APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine for their support and encouragement and to Laurie W. Jessup, Queensland Herbarium (BRI), Brisbane, Australia, for her review of and additions to the data. This study was primarily based on the fruit-seed collection housed at the USDA, ARS, U.S. National Seed Herbarium (BARC), Beltsville, Maryland, USA, however we want to thank those herbaria that loaned us additional material: AD, B, BISH, BOL, BM, BRI, CAN, CANB, CHR, E, EA, F, GH, K, KSU, L, LE, MEXU, MO, NAL, NBG, NSW, NTBG, NY, P, PRE, SGO, UBA, US, and W.
