Nomenclature etc. BURSERACEAE. Syn.: Santiriopsis trimera (Oliv.) Engl., Pachylobus trimera Engl. Trade and local names: kono, mende, temne (SL); kru-basa, mano (LR); gologdo (NG); baba (CP, CG); ebo (GA); toab (CD); libaba, poba, lai (CM); adjouaba à racines aériennes (CI).

Description based on 4 specimens. Tree. Geographic distribution: tropical Africa.

General. Heartwood basically brown, yellow. Sapwood colour similar to heartwood colour.

Vessels. Wood diffuse porous. Vessels in multiples, commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate. Vessel-ray pits with reduced borders or apparently simple, rounded or angular or horizontal to vertical. Tyloses present, thinwalled.

Tracheids and fibres. Fibres of medium wall thickness. Fibre pits mainly restricted to radial walls, simple to minutely bordered. Fibres exclusively septate; evenly distributed.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present. Axial parenchyma paratracheal. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty to vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands.

Rays. Rays multiseriate, 1–2(–3) cells wide. Height of large rays up to 500 µm. Rays composed of two or more cell types (heterocellular). Heterocellular rays with square and upright cells restricted to marginal rows, mostly 1 marginal row of upright or square cells or mostly 2–4 marginal rows of upright or square cells.

Secretory structures. Intercellular canals present, oriented radially.

Mineral inclusions. Crystals present, prismatic, located in ray cells. Number of crystals per cell or chamber one. Silica present, as grains; in rays cells (primarily in the marginal cell rows).

Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour of water extract colourless to brown. Ethanol extract not fluorescent. Colour of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Splinter burns to partial ash. Ash yellow-brown.
