Tree. Geographic distribution: tropical Africa, Mexico and Central America, Caribbean, tropical South America.

General. Heartwood basically white or grey (to light brown). Sapwood colour similar to heartwood colour. Density 0.3–0.55 g/cm³.

Vessels. Wood diffuse porous. Vessels in multiples, commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Average tangential vessel diameter 80–260 µm. Average number of vessels/mm² 3–6(–15). Average vessel element length 300–880 µm. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, average diameter (vertical) 10–15 µm. Vessel-ray pits with reduced borders or apparently simple, rounded or angular or horizontal to vertical. Tyloses absent.

Tracheids and fibres. Fibres very thin-walled, or of medium wall thickness. Average fibre length 850–1430 µm. Fibre pits mainly restricted to radial walls, simple to minutely bordered. Fibres exclusively septate; evenly distributed.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present. Apotracheal axial parenchyma diffuse-in-aggregates. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty, or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands. Average number of cells per strand: 4.

Rays. Rays 2–4 per tangential mm, multiseriate, 3–5(–7) cells wide. Rays composed of two or more cell types (heterocellular). Heterocellular rays with square and upright cells restricted to marginal rows, mostly 1 marginal row of upright or square cells.

Secretory structures. Intercellular canals present, oriented radially.

Mineral inclusions. Crystals present, prismatic, located in ray cells and axial parenchyma cells. Crystal-containing ray cells upright and/or square and procumbent. Crystal-containing axial parenchyma cells not chambered. Number of crystals per cell or chamber one. Silica not observed.

Physical and chemical tests. Froth test negative.
