Nomenclature. Family: PINACEAE. Synonym(s): Pinus mandshurica, P. cembra var. mandshurica. Further trade and local names: hong song (CN); chosen goyo, chosen matsu (JP); jat-namu (KR); pin de Corée (FR); Chinese pinenut, Korean white pine (GB, US); kedr (RU). Code according to DIN EN 13556: none.
CITES(EU) status of protection. Listed in Annex III(C) (Russian Federation 2014).
Similar timbers. All species of the "white pine" group (Pinus, sect. strobus).
Geographic distribution. Temperate Asia.
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct; transition from earlywood to latewood gradual. Heartwood basically brown, red, yellow; without streaks. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour. Odour distinct (resinous). Wood light weight and soft, or of medium weight (0.40–0.44–0.52 g/cm3). Surface oily. Interlocked grain absent.
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) absent (= softwood).
Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high. On clean transverse sections wider, light-colored rays can be observed at irregular intervals; these contain radial resin canals.
Resin canals. Normal resin canals present (axial + radial); diffuse; large.
Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract yellow. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown, or yellow. For the "burning splinter test" sufficient material was not available; therefore these characters are not coded.
