Nomenclature. Family: OLEACEAE. Further trade and local names: Japanese ash (GB, US); yachidamo, tamo (JP); shui qu liu (CN); deulme-namu (KO); asiatische Schwarzesche (DE). Code according to DIN EN 13556: none.
CITES(EU) status of protection. Listed in Annex III(C) (Russian Federation 2014).
Similar timbers. All species of the genus Fraxinus, and the species Peronema canescens (Verbenaceae) from Indo-Malesia.
Geographic distribution. Temperate Asia. From eastern Russia to Japan.
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct. Heartwood basically brown, white or grey. Sapwood similar to heartwood colour, or distinct from heartwood colour. Odour indistinct or absent. Wood of medium weight (0.51–0.56–0.59 g/cm3). Interlocked grain absent.
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).
Vessels (pores). Wood ring-porous; earlywood pore ring multiseriate. Vessels (pores) in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels small (latewood), or large (earlywood). Tyloses present. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) absent.
Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present; banded. Parenchyma bands exclusively marginal (or seemingly marginal), or not (only) marginal; narrow (in last formed latewood), or wide (marginal bands); much wider than rays. Other macroscopically visible types of axial parenchyma: vasicentric, aliform lozenge type, confluent (in latewood).
Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.
Storied structure. Storied structure absent.
Resin canals. Normal resin canals absent.
Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Froth test negative. Splinter burns to full ash; colour of ash white to grey.
