Nomenclature. Family: MORACEAE. Other trade relevant species: A. africana, A. toxicaria, A. welwitschii. Further trade and local names: Africa: ako (DE, CI, SN); akede (CI); bonkonko (CD); chenchen (GH); kirundu (EAfr); mongodou, false oro (NG); vawi, diolosso (CM); Southeast Asia: ipoh, opas, paliu, terap (MY). Code according to DIN EN 13556: ATTX.

CITES(EU) status of protection. Not protected.

Similar timbers. Easily mistaken for Gonystylus spp. (CITES II).

Geographic distribution. Burma to Indomalesia (A. toxicaria), tropical Africa (all other listed species).

Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct, or indistinct or absent. Heartwood basically light brown, yellow (darkening to light golden brown under exposure); without streaks. Sapwood similar to heartwood colour (up to 15 cm wide). Wood light weight and soft, or of medium weight (0.40–0.45–0.50 g/cm3). Interlocked grain present (producing a more or less pronounced ribbon figure on quarter-sawn faces).

Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).

Vessels (pores). Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels (pores) in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels large (155–200–245 µm); very few to few (4–10). Tyloses present. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) absent.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present; not banded. Other macroscopically visible types of axial parenchyma: vasicentric.

Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.

Storied structure. Storied structure absent.

Included phloem. Included phloem absent.

Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Splinter burns to partial ash; colour of ash white to grey.
