Interlocked grain absent (however, it may occur occasionally but is not a characteristic feature of the timber).

Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).

Vessels (pores). Wood ring-porous, or semi-ring-porous (depending on growth conditions); earlywood pore ring uniseriate (occasionally with short biseriate tracks). Vessels (pores) in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels medium, or large (50–130 µm in latewood, 300–450 µm in earlywood); few (8–15 in earlywood), or moderately numerous (20–30 in latewood). Tyloses absent. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) present (dark reddish brown, sometimes pale yellow).

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present; banded. Parenchyma bands exclusively marginal (or seemingly marginal); wide. Other macroscopically visible types of axial parenchyma: diffuse-in-aggregates, vasicentric (hardly visible even with a hand lens).

Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.

Storied structure. Storied structure absent.

Resin canals. Normal resin canals absent (traumatic resin canals in tangential rows can be observed occasionally).

Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract fluorescent (yellowish green); colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Splinter burns to full ash; colour of ash bright white.

Additional information. • Transverse section + wood surface. Radial surface, natural size. Transverse section ca. 10x. Toona spp. (Suren, Toon).
