Nomenclature. Family: MELIACEAE. Synonym(s): Swietenia angolensis. Further trade and local names: edinam (GH); gedu nohor, gedu lohor (GB, NG); koupri, lokoa popo (CI); abenbegne (GA); timbi (CM); ipaki, longo, mukumi (CG); mukuso, muyovou (UG); kalungi, lifaki (CD); livuite (AO). Code according to DIN EN 13556: ENAN.
CITES(EU) status of protection. Not protected.
Similar timbers. Easily mistaken for Swietenia spp. (CITES II).
Geographic distribution. Tropical Africa. Tropical regions of Central- and Westafrica (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabun, Congo, Angola, Zaïre, Uganda).
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct (demarcated by often rather indistinct (little colour contrast) marginal parenchyma bands visible only with a lens on clean end grain surfaces). Heartwood basically brown to red. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour (grey to pinkish and commonly very wide). Wood of medium weight (0.44–0.52–0.59 g/cm3). Interlocked grain present (producing a more or less pronounced ribbon figure on quarter-sawn faces).
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).
Vessels (pores). Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels (pores) arranged in no specific pattern; in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels large (140–170–220 µm); very few to few (2–4–8). Tyloses absent. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) present (red brown).
Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma present; banded, or not banded. Parenchyma bands exclusively marginal (or seemingly marginal); narrow. Other macroscopically visible types of axial parenchyma: vasicentric.
Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.
Storied structure. Storied structure absent.
Resin canals. Normal resin canals absent (occasional occurrence of resin canals are of traumatic origin).
Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract colourless to brown (to reddish brown). Ethanol extract fluorescent (yellowish); colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown, or red. Froth test positive (a faint ring of foam persists). Splinter burns to partial ash; colour of ash white to grey.
