Chlorocardium rodiei (Greenheart)

Nomenclature. Family: LAURACEAE. Synonym(s): syn.: Ocotea rodiei, Nectandra rodiei. Further trade and local names: itaúba branca, bibiru (BR); beeberoe, groenhart, sipiroe (SN); viruviru (VE). Code according to DIN EN 13556: OCRD.

CITES(EU) status of protection. Not protected.

Similar timbers. Similar to Guaiacum spp. (CITES II), Bulnesia sarmientoi (CITES II), Bulnesia arborea, Handroanthus spp. (not protected).

Geographic distribution. Tropical South America. Guyanas and northern Brazil.

Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries indistinct or absent. Heartwood basically brown, green; occasionally with streaks. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour. Wood heavy and hard (0.90–1.02–1.10 g/cm3). Interlocked grain present.

Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).

Vessels (pores). Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels (pores) in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels medium to large (110–130–170 µm); few (6–11–13). Tyloses present. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) absent.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma not visible.

Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.

Storied structure. Storied structure absent.

Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Heartwood extractives not leachable by water. Ethanol extract fluorescent (yellowish lavender); colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Froth test negative. Splinter burns to charcoal.
