Nomenclature. Family: LAURACEAE. Synonym(s): Aniba duckei Kostermans; A. rosaeodora Ducke var. amazonica Ducke. Further trade and local names: pau rosa verdadeiro, pau rosa imbaúba, pau rosa itaúba, pau rosa mulatinho (BR); bois de rose (FR); cara-cara (GY); bois de rose femelle (GF). Code according to DIN EN 13556: none.
CITES(EU) status of protection. Listed in Annex II(B).
Similar timbers. Many species of the genus Aniba and other genera of Lauraceae.
Geographic distribution. Tropical South America. Brazil (Amapá, Amazonas, Pará), Columbia, Ecuador, Guyanas, Peru, Surinam.
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries indistinct or absent. Heartwood basically brown, yellow, green; without streaks. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour. Odour distinct (strongly aromatic (linalool)). Wood of medium weight (0.54–0.58 g/cm3). Interlocked grain present.
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).
Vessels (pores). Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels (pores) arranged in no specific pattern; in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels medium ((80-)115–135(-170)); few (10–14–17). Tyloses present. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) absent.
Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma not visible.
Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.
Storied structure. Storied structure absent.
Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract fluorescent (light greenish blue); colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Heartwood extractives not leachable by water. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Froth test negative. Splinter burns to partial ash; colour of ash white to grey.
