Geographic distribution. Mexico and Central America, tropical South America. Dipteryx oleifera: from Costa Rica to northern Colombia; Dipteryx odorata and other species: Venezuela south to Paraguay.
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries indistinct or absent. Heartwood basically brown, red, purple. Sapwood distinct from heartwood colour. Fresh heartwood yellowish to red to violet-brown, later darkening to yellowish-brown to olive-brown, sometimes with streaks. Odour indistinct or absent. Wood heavy and hard (0,75–0.90–1.10 g/cm3). Surface oily, or not oily. Interlocked grain present.
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) present (= hardwood).
Vessels (pores). Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels (pores) in multiples; commonly in short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessels medium to large (100–200 µm); few (5–10). Tyloses absent. Other deposits in heartwood vessels (pores) present.

Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.

Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent (Dipteryx oleifera). Water extract not fluorescent (Dipteryx oleifera); colour shade of water extract colourless to brown (Dipteryx oleifera). Ethanol extract not fluorescent (Dipteryx oleifera); colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown (Dipteryx oleifera). Froth test positive (Dipteryx oleifera). Splinter burns to partial ash (Dipteryx oleifera); colour of ash bright white (Dipteryx oleifera).
