Nomenclature. Family: ARAUCARIACEAE. Synonym(s): Araucaria brasiliana, A. dioica, A. elegans, A. gracilis, A. ridolfiana, A. saviana, Columbea angustifolia. Further trade and local names: pinho do Paraná, pinheiro (BR); curiy (AR, PY). Code according to DIN EN 13556: ARAN.
CITES(EU) status of protection. Not protected.
Similar timbers. Cannot be distingished from Araucaria araucana (CITES I).
Geographic distribution. Southern Brazil, temperate South America.
Growth rings, colour, grain, etc. Growth ring boundaries distinct (growth ring boundaries best observed on clean cross sections, demarcated by a very narrow band of slightly darker latewood); transition from earlywood to latewood gradual. Heartwood basically brown, yellow; with streaks (heartwood of old growth timber frequently marked by brown to orange-brown, redddish or even greenish colour stripes). Sapwood similar to heartwood colour, or distinct from heartwood colour (more rarely). Odour indistinct or absent. Wood of medium weight (± 0.50 g/cm3). Interlocked grain absent.
Hardwood vs softwood. Vessels (pores) absent (= softwood).
Rays. Rays narrow. Large rays commonly less than 1 mm high.
Resin canals. Normal resin canals absent.
Physical and chemical tests. Heartwood not fluorescent. Water extract not fluorescent; colour shade of water extract colourless to brown. Ethanol extract not fluorescent; colour shade of ethanol extract colourless to brown. Splinter burns to full ash; colour of ash dark grey to nearly black.
Additional information. • Transverse section + wood surface. Araucaria angustifolia (Brasilkiefer, Parana pine). Transverse section ca. 10x. Radial surface, natural size.
