Adults. Head loosely scaled. Eyes glabrous; not ciliated. Antennae of males ciliate. Labial palps medium; ascending.
Wingspan 22–26 mm. The thorax dark coloured like the ground colour of the forewings, the abdomen paler and like the hindwings. Forewings dark brown or blackish, with pale markings; brown, or blackish; complexly patterned; the patterning well marked (with the broad, pale subcostal streak, sub-marginal band and hind-marginal streak continuous, except near the wing-tip); reniform defined (joined with and of the same whitish hue as the broad sub-costal streak); orbicular undefined; claviform undefined. Hindwings dingy fuscous; terminally darkened; without a clear discal mark; transversely lined (with a darker band); exhibiting vein 5. Vein 5 of the hindwings strong; arising nearer to vein 4 than to vein 6; convergent on vein 4 near their bases. Thorax slightly crested (posteriorly). Middle tibiae without spines. Posterior tibiae with spines; with appressed scales. Abdomen not crested.
Living adults found June.
Larvae, pupae. Larvae feeding on Cyperaceae and coarse grasses; pupating in the soil.
British representation. 1 species; South-east England, Central-southern England, South-west England, English Midlands, Northern England, Southern Scotland, Northern Scotland, Wales, and Ireland (local); uncula (The Silver Hook).
