Morphology. The fruit-bodies producing basidia and basidiospores; persistent; flattened and more or less appressed to the substrate or encrusting, with the hymenium on the outside (resupinate, waxy). The hymenium smooth. The hymenial layer not readily separable from the supporting flesh. Cystidia present; leptocystidia. Hyphidia represented by dichohyphidia (skeletohyphidia and dendrohyphidia absent). The basidia ‘unmodified’. The basidiospores mostly amyloid.
The hyphal walls lamellate, with a thin, electron-dense outer layer and a relatively thick, electron-transparent inner layer. The hyphae monomitic.
Chemical reactions. The context hyphae not xanthochroic.
Ecology. Saprophytic.
Representation in Britain and Ireland. About 20 species in Britain (mostly in Phlebiella); Lepidomyces, Phlebiella, Xenasma, Xenosperma.
World representation. 56 species; genera 6. Europe, North America.
Classification. Basidiomycota; Basidiomycetes; Agaricomycetidae; Polyporales (formerly Stereales).
