Morphology. The fruit-bodies producing basidia and basidiospores; pustulate (or gall-forming, sometimes forming within the host tissues); gelatinous and somewhat translucent when moist. The basidia ‘modified’; partially longitudinally quadripartite at the apex; 2–8; maturing at different times. The basidiospores germinating by budding; ballistosporic.
The hyphal walls lamellate, with a thin, electron-dense outer layer and a relatively thick, electron-transparent inner layer. The hyphae with dolipore septa.
Ecology. Parasitic; on other fungi (on agarics, corticoids, and Leotiales).
Representation in Britain and Ireland. 6 species in Britain; Syzygospora.
World representation. 15 species; genera 1. North temperate, widespread.
Classification. Basidiomycota; Basidiomycetes; Tremellomycetidae; Tremellales.
