Anastrepha maya Hernández-Ortiz

Body. Setae golden to pale orange, or orange.

Head. Frons without brown markings except ocellar tubercle. Occiput without brown marks. Frontal setae 3–4. Orbital setae 2. Ocellar seta well developed ("at least as long and stout as postocellar setae", Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Gena without brown spot. Facial carina in profile concave or flat on dorsal 2/3. Face without brown markings. Antenna not extended to ventral margin of face.

Thorax. Mesonotum length 1.9–2.75 mm (2.05–2.57, Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Scutum mostly or entirely microtrichose ("microtrichia present . . . except along poserior margin", Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Postpronotal, presutural supra-alar, dorsocentral, intra-alar and scutellar setae well developed, subequal to or longer than scutellum length. Acrostichal seta well developed. Basal scutellar seta strong, longer than scutellum. Mesonotum yellow, or orange. Scutum posteriorly with pair of brown spots or markings. Scutum posteriorly with only pair of ovoid brown spots on or slightly lateral to dorsocentral line (between dorsocentral and intra-alar setae); without brown vittae. Scutellum brown on side, markings not connected apically (with small, distinct spot ventral to basal seta). Mesopleuron mostly yellow to orange, without brown markings. Subscutellum yellow to red brown medially, dark brown laterally. Mediotergite entirely yellow to orange.

Wings. Wing length 4.75–5.85 mm (4.82–5.77, Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Wing pattern typical Anastrepha pattern (S-band complete or at most interrupted at crossvein r-m, C-band and at least proximal arm of V-band present) (except S-band interrupted at crossvein r-m). C-band broadly extending to vein M in cell br along cell bm; covering base of cell r2+3; yellow or orange area posterior to pterostigma broad, extending distally into cells r1 and r2+3 at least to level of midlength of pterostigma. C-band and S-band connected (along vein R2+3, cell r1 with small rounded basomarginal or isolated basal hyaline spot), or connected along costal margin (very narrowly). Basal hyaline area between C-band and S-band extended anteriorly beyond vein R4+5, or extended to vein R4+5. Cell r1 basomarginal hyaline spot apex aligned proximal to crossvein r-m, or apex aligned with crossvein r-m. S-band not extended anteriorly to vein R4+5 and not covering all of crossvein r-m. Cell bm entirely hyaline or infuscated only along subapical fold. S-band posterior margin with distinct incision in cell cu1. S-band base without extension in middle of cell cu1 to posterior wing margin; without extension in cell a1 to or almost to posterior margin. S-band middle section predominantly or entirely orange, often with brown margins. Subapical hyaline area in radial cells distal to r-m extending anteriorly to vein R2+3. S-band distal section with very narrow marginal hyaline band in cell r2+3 or with small marginal hyaline spot(s) near apices of veins R2+3 and/or R4+5. S-band distally not extended to apex of vein M. V-band proximal arm as dark as apical half of S-band; connected anteriorly to S-band along vein R4+5 or in cell r2+3 (broadly connected); not connected to S-band in cell dm. V-band distal arm complete; connected to proximal arm of V band. Apex of V-band extended from vein R4+5 to vein M, no hyaline area present between band and vein M. Vein R2+3 strongly sinuous; without accessory vein. Crossvein dm-cu orientation with anterior end more distal than posterior end.

Abdomen. Abdominal tergite without brown markings. Phallus length 1.98, Hernández-Ortiz 2004. Glans present. Oviscape length 2.25–2.7 mm (2.35–2.62, Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Eversible membrane with dorsobasal denticles all sclerotized, in continuous triangular to semicircular or suboval pattern. Eversible membrane with with few short yellowish hooklike sclerotized denticles in 3–4 lines, Hernández-Ortiz 2004. Aculeus length 1.8–2.25 mm (1.92–2.13, Hernández-Ortiz 2004). Aculeus tip length 0.025–0.04 mm (0.033, Hernández-Ortiz 2004); not flared outward at or proximal to base; without ridges or lobes; without elongate dorsolateral depressions apically; not serrate; serrated part 0 times length of tip.

Miscellaneous. Data source: Hernández-Ortiz 2004. Sex of recorded specimens: male and female. Species group: tripunctata group.

Biology and economic significance. This species is not considered economically important. Refer to the 'Tephritidae Databases' in the USDA Compendium of Fruit Fly Host Information (https://coffhi.cphst.org/) for host plant information.

We advise against extracting comparative information from the descriptions. This is much more easily achieved using the DELTA data files or the interactive key, which allows access to the character list, illustrations, full and partial descriptions, diagnostic descriptions, differences and similarities between taxa, lists of taxa exhibiting or lacking specified attributes, and distributions of character states within any set of taxa.
