Notes on the scanning of the images presented in this package

Most of Curtis’s plates were first routinely scanned at 150 dpi. While this resolution often adequately displays his representations of the adult insects and associated plants, it is inadequate for the small, black-and-white engravings of mouthparts, legs and other features of taxonomic interest presented towards the foot of each plate. Faithfully portraying the superb quality of the originals calls for scanning at 600 dpi, which for the full page plates results in files of unmanageable size, and the full-plate scans are therefore often supplemented by high resolution versions confined to the insects themselves. The JPEG illustrations provided here were designed for convenience of distribution and screen display, and are less sharp than the high resolution TIFF scans from which they were generated. The latter have been retained, and could be made available on request for worthwhile applications.
